She was inspired in part by Robert Shields, keeper of the world’s longest diary, who recorded the goings-on of his life at five-minute intervals (to the tune of 37.5 million words). In 2008, writer Rachel Khong began keeping a food log, a list of every meal she consumed. “I think we are well advised,” Didion observed (cannily enough to be endlessly quoted), “to keep on nodding terms with the people we used to be, whether we find them attractive company or not.” These are reminders not of life, but of Joan. A recipe for sauerkraut evokes the coziness of a boozy, rainy day on Fire Island the sense memory of cracked crab for lunch as a child makes her “see the afternoon all over again,” no matter that the crab was almost certainly fictitious. Her essay is called “On Keeping a Notebook,” and Didion, to be clear, kept one (perhaps still does)-a place to document not what happened to her, but “how it felt to be me,” scraps of experience, sometimes factual, sometimes embroidered. “My approach to daily life ranges from the grossly negligent to the merely absent, and on those few occasions when I have tried dutifully to record a day’s events, boredom has so overcome me that the results are mysterious at best.” ![]() “At no point have I ever been able successfully to keep a diary,” Joan Didion once wrote. ![]() ![]() ![]() Anyhow, even for John, he was very nearly real. Although the text itself does not draw attention to this fact, the idea that turtles live their (very long) lives at a different pace than humans is ably captured in the illustrations, which conclude with Nia's birthday party (albeit not the one the reader may expect). The third picture-book that author/artist Thyra Heder has produced, following upon Fraidyzoo and The Bear Report, Alfie: (The Turtle That Disappeared) offers a lovely depiction of a human-turtle relationship, as viewed by the two different participants. ![]() Unfortunately, as a turtle, he doesn't move very fast. ![]() Where can he be? But these are minor imperfections in an otherwise excellent recording. His impersonation of the Kennedys' famous Boston accents is only passable, and the occasional snippets of swelling music, complete with majestic trumpet calls, will strike some as over-the-top. McGonagle is an experienced actor, and he keeps the reading at an even pace while rarely straying from a restrained, dignified tone. Dallek ( Flawed Giant: Lyndon Johnson and His Times, 1961-1973) plumbs several pertinent family papers for fresh revelations on Kennedy's health and liaisons, and ably outlines his upbringing, family history and path to the presidency. McGonagle's commanding voice and sober approach fit well with this scholarly, fascinating look at the life of an American icon. ![]() ![]() ![]() “Readers will revel in the heroic antics. “Readers will revel in the heroic antics.” – The New York Times But with the help of 217 slightly out of the ordinary cats, Katie’s going to try!Ĭan she clear the Mousestress’s name, uncover the real supervillain, and become the sidekick (and the friend) she’s always dreamed of being?ĭon't miss more Katie the Catsitters- Katie the Catsitter 1 and Katie the Catsitter 3: Secrets and Sidekicks! ![]() Fixing this will be harder than any skateboarding trick.
